FoodTalk (“we,” “us,” or “the app”) is a voice-first macro and nutrition tracker. This policy explains what we collect, why, how it’s used, and the choices you have. We keep it plain because privacy shouldn’t require a law degree.

The short version

  • We collect your email (to create your account) and the food, goals, and weight you log.
  • We use a speech-to-text feature and an AI service only to turn what you say into food items and macros.
  • We don’t sell your data, and we don’t show ads.
  • Your data is stored securely and tied to your account. You can export or delete it anytime.

What we collect

1. Account information

  • Your email address and a password (passwords are stored securely by our authentication provider; we never see them in plain text).

2. Nutrition data you create

  • The foods you log, quantities, meals, calories and macros, your goals/targets, and any weight entries you add.

3. Voice input

  • When you use voice logging, your speech is converted to text. On the iOS app this happens using Apple’s on-device speech recognition. We do not record or store audio. Only the resulting text (what you said) is used.

4. Basic technical/usage data

  • Minimal information needed to run the service (e.g., how many logs you’ve made in a day, to apply free-tier limits). We do not use third-party advertising or cross-app tracking.

We do not collect location, contacts, photos, or health data from Apple Health (unless a future version explicitly asks and you opt in).

How your information is used

  • To create and secure your account.
  • To convert your spoken or typed meals into structured food items with accurate macros.
  • To store and sync your log, goals, and weight across your devices.
  • To enforce free vs. premium limits (e.g., the daily voice-log cap).
  • To operate, maintain, and improve the app.

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it for third-party advertising.

Third-party services we use

To provide the app, limited data is shared with service providers strictly to perform these functions:

  • Google (Gemini API) — when you log a meal, the text of that meal (what you said or typed) is sent to Google’s Gemini AI to interpret it into food items and macros. Only the meal text is sent — no audio, and no information that identifies you. The app asks for your permission before this happens, and you can read what Google does with data sent to the Gemini API in Google’s privacy policy. This text is processed to return a result and is not used to identify you.
  • Supabase — stores your account and your nutrition data securely, and runs the secure functions that process your requests.
  • USDA FoodData Central — public nutrition database queried to verify food macros.
  • Apple — the App Store, on-device speech recognition, and (for Premium) in-app purchases handled by Apple.

Each provider processes data only to deliver its part of the service, and provides protections at least equal to those described in this policy.

Data storage, security, and retention

  • Your data is stored in secure, access-controlled databases. Each account can only access its own data (enforced at the database level).
  • We retain your data for as long as your account is active.
  • You can delete your account and all associated data at any time from within the app (Settings). When you do, your account and your stored nutrition data are permanently removed. Deletion requests can also be made by emailing us.

Your rights and choices

Depending on where you live (e.g., under GDPR or CCPA), you may have the right to access, correct, export, or delete your personal data, and to withdraw consent. FoodTalk honors these for all users:

  • Access / export: request a copy of your data.
  • Delete: delete your account in-app or by email; we remove your data.
  • Correction: edit your logs, goals, and profile directly in the app.

We do not sell personal information, so there is no “sale” to opt out of.

Children’s privacy

FoodTalk is not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age in your region), and we do not knowingly collect data from them. If you believe a child has provided us data, contact us and we will remove it.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the app evolves. Material changes will be reflected by updating the “Last updated” date, and where appropriate, noted in the app.
